SUMMARY:RBO Ballet: Ballet to Broadway: Wheeldon Works
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Ballet BALLET TO BROADWAY: WHEELDON WORKS[Mixed Programme; 1 Revival\, 3 New Productions] \nSensuous contemporary ballet meets the energy of musical theatre in four distinctive short works. Fool’s Paradise\, The Two of Us\, Us\, An American in Paris: four works showing the remarkable choreographic range of The Royal Ballet's Artistic Associate\, Christopher Wheeldon. \nFOOL’S PARADISE Luminescent and shimmering\, Fool’s Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon’s many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon’s own company\, Morphoses\, and first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet. \nTHE TWO OF US The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us\, a duet of deep intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York\, and had American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast. \nUS (DUET) Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten Henson’s music.  \nAN AMERICAN IN PARIS (BALLET)  The Royal Ballet celebrates Wheeldon’s extraordinary success in musical theatre by performing the ballet scene from his Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. Set to Gershwin’s jazzy melodies\, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The musical went on to win four Tony awards.  The full musical depicts a blossoming romance between the American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina\, Lise Dassin. The ballet excerpt was Wheeldon’s take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film – an extended sequence in which the two central characters dance through Paris.   \nRunning time: 210 minutes\, Two intervalsTickets £17 and £11 for under 18Licensed bar (card or cash)\, with wine\, beer\, soft drinks\, tea and coffee\, run by the VHC.\n\n\nCast:To be confirmed \nCreatives:CHOREOGRAPHY Christopher WheeldonCONDUCTOR Koen KesselsORCHESTRA Orchestra of the Royal Opera HouseMUSIC:Joby TalbotJoni MitchellKeaton HensonGeorge Gershwhin Trailer – Ballet to Broadway

SUMMARY:An Evening with Robin Ince
DESCRIPTION:Blue Bear Bookshop welcomes their dear friend\, Robin Ince\, to the Victoria Hall in Hartley Wintney. Robin will be sharing details of his new book\, Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal. \nA powerful\, personal exploration of anxiety\, ADHD and neurodiversity\, Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal reminds us all – no matter how weird we feel – that it’s okay to be a little different.  We all are. What if being a bit weird is actually entirely normal? What if sharing our internal struggles wasn’t a sign of weakness\, but strength? \nFor over thirty years\, award-winning broadcaster and comedian Robin Ince has entertained thousands in person and on air. But underneath the surface\, a whirlwind was at play – a struggle with sadness\, concentration\, self-doubt and near-constant anxiety. But then he discovered he had all the hallmarks of ADHD and his stumbling blocks became stepping stones. \nIn Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal\, Robin uses his own experiences to explore the neurodivergent experience and to ask what the point of “being normal” really is. Packed with personal insights\, intimate anecdotes and interviews with psychologists\, neuroscientists and many neurodivergent people he has met along the way\, this is a quirky and witty dive into the world of human behaviour. \nRobin Ince is a comedian\, actor and writer. The Guardian once declared him a ‘becardiganed polymath’ which seems about right. He is the author of several acclaimed books\, including The Importance of Being Interested and I’m a Joke and So Are You. \nWith Professor Brian Cox\, he created and presents the award-winning BBC Radio 4 show The Infinite Monkey Cage\, which ranks among the most popular science podcasts worldwide.  He also won Celebrity Mastermind but forgot that calcium was the dominant element of chalk. After being diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 52\, he finally has an excuse. \nEvent Information – Author Talk style event. Friday 23rd May -Doors open at 6pm\, event starts at 6.30pm. Tickets available instore and online\, from £12. Tickets are non-refundable. Each general admission ticket is redeemable for £10 off the price of a book\, please show your ticket at the event to claim your discount. For any questions or further details about the event please email info@bluebearbookshop.com \nThe event will be held in the beautiful Victoria Halls\, West Green Road\, Hartley Wintney\, Hook\, Hampshire RG27 8RQ. \nThis event is organised and run by Blue Bear Bookshop.

SUMMARY:Literary Lunch - Chris & Denise Arthey - Highway 35
DESCRIPTION:Chris and Denise Arthey  \nMotorcycle road trips across the United States were a lifelong dream\, and now\, with children grown up and a new work posting to Texas\, it finally seemed within reach for Chris and Denise Arthey. But only a few hours down the road\, on an arrow-straight stretch of Highway 35\, devastation struck. A drunk driver veered across the carriageway and their Harley-Davidson was involved in a head-on collision. One medic commented after the air ambulances lifted off that ‘the motorcyclists may not make it’. \nThe Artheys did ‘make it’\, and then some. Both lost their left leg above the knee\, and Chris suffered serious head and internal injuries\, but their survival was remarkable. \nEven more remarkable is the story of their recovery. As Chris and Denise learned to cope with pain and a new reality\, they simply refused to become physically held back\, or to be frozen in anger and regret. They have gone on to lead extraordinarily full lives; returning to their vocations and taking another overseas posting to the Middle East before building new roles as ambassadors in the prosthetics industry. Chris has taken in marathons and triathlons\, Mount Kilimanjaro\, Everest Base Camp and a master’s degree along the way. \nWith an honesty that is both raw and vulnerable\, the Artheys take us on their unique journey of hope against all odds\, explaining how they rebuilt their lives\, ‘step by step’\, after their accident. More than a compelling story of survival\, Highway 35 is an account of astounding personal strength and fighting spirit\, of depth and integrity of relationship and uncompromising faith in the face of the most difficult of challenges. \nChris & Denise Website \nTickets £23 including a light lunch and a glass of wine. \nBooking a seat is available online. If you wish to sit with a group of friends\, the booking should be done at the same time to obtain adjacent seat numbers. \nSeating changes may be available up to 1 week before the event by phoning Cass in the VH Office on 01252 844876 (Mon-Thu 0900-1500 Fri 0800-1500) or email to admin.victoriahall@gmail.com MainQuiche – bacon\, onion & cheeseRed onion & goats cheese tart (V)Potatoes and salad are placed on the table Dessert     There will be a selection of mini desserts\, served on large platters for people to help themselves.Chocolate brownie squares with raspberry & whipped creamMini Meringue with seasonal Fruit (GF)Fruit Skewers – mango\, pineapple\, melon (GF DF)  \nTea or Coffee

SUMMARY:Live At The Jubilee: Dana Gillespie
DESCRIPTION:Dana Gillespie \nBorn in 1949\, Dana moved from the countryside to central London during a blues revival in her mid-childhood. At 16\, she began recording singles for Pye\, and by 1968\, she was signed by Decca\, leading to two LPs\, the second of which she wrote entirely herself\, called Box Of Surprises. \nAt the turn of the decade\, Dana's talent led her to become part of the original London cast of two prominent musicals – Catch My Soul and Jesus Christ Superstar. At the same time\, she was part of a team of session singers that recorded soundalike versions of pop hits for Avenue Records\, alongside Elton John\, David Byron\, and Madeline Bell. Dana and her childhood friend David Bowie were both managed by Tony Defries and his MainMan company. \nIn 1973\, Dana released her third album\, Weren’t Born A Man\, produced by Bowie\, Mick Ronson\, Robin Cable\, and Dana herself\, at Trident Studios on RCA. The follow-up\, Ain’t Gonna Play No Second Fiddle\, came out in 1974\, and Dana embarked on a US tour in support of it. However\, while working on demos for her third RCA album\, MainMan disbanded\, and she was unable to record while still in contract. Consequently\, Dana returned to the UK and pursued gigs and acting jobs\, where she appeared alongside the likes of Peter Cook\, Dudley Moore\, and Denholm Elliott. \nIn 1982\, Dana resumed her recording career with Blue Job\, a collection of early 20th-century bawdy blues numbers. She then released Solid Romance in 1984\, which spawned an international hit\, ‘Move Your Body Close To Me’\, before fully committing to the blues. She founded and ran the Mustique Blues Festival with Basil Charles OBE for two decades\, and in 1997\, she joined the UK leg of Bob Dylan’s tour as a ‘special guest’.  \n \nToday\, Dana tours worldwide\, including India\, Austria\, Switzerland\, Germany\, and Britain\, and she frequently performs with the London Blues Band at venues such as the 606 Club\, Chelsea\, and The Temple of Art and Music\, Elephant & Castle. Her latest albums include Under My Bed and Deep Pockets\, both released by Ace Records in 2019 and 2021\, respectively. Her Decca recordings have been anthologized as London Social Degree\, while her RCA recordings were compiled as What Memories We Make.  \nOverall\, Dana Gillespie's life and work have been full of adventure\, creativity\, and talent\, making her a true icon in the world of music and entertainment. \nDana will be accompanied by her pianist Dino Baptiste\, a previous performer at The Jubilee Hall!It will be a great night of music.Dana's Website \nTickets £17Licensed bar (card or cash)\, with wine\, beer\, and soft drinks\, run by the VHC.

SUMMARY:Literary Lunch - Nigel Shakespear: Editor of 'The Diary of Connie Shakespear'
DESCRIPTION:Nigel ShakespearConnie Shakespear's 'Diary' is a record of her travels as she accompanied her husband (a Captain in the Naga Hills Military Police) through the Naga Hills district of N.E. India in 1900-1902. The book documents the indigenous people and their life in Naga villages as well as elements of the British administration at that time. As the wife of a soldier in the Indian Army Connie has attitudes and perspectives typical of her background but she was also an unusual 'memsahib' who took a keen interest in the country and the Naga people among whom they travelled. \nThe result is a unique written and photographic record of Naga villages and their people at the turn of the 20th century as well as the self-portrait of an intrepid Victorian woman traveller\, one who could both observe and engage with the Nagas. \nThrough this personal journal\, with her interest\, close observation and documentation\, Connie presents a window on a world of tradition that was about to change. She describes the country and the people with whom she engages giving an insight into their customs and the lifestyle of the villagers. She recounts her interactions with them and their own curious observation of herself and her party with sympathy and humour. \nHer sketches and photographs\, taken with the new technology of handheld cameras for amateurs\, cover Naga morungs\, graves\, villagers in traditional clothing as well as the villages and landscape. She also covers her life in Kohima which is the British administrative base for the district\, located at the periphery of the British Raj. \nWith ten chapters of text\, sketches and photographs the diary is primary source material for those with an interest in anthropology\, history and photography of the period and at the same time provides a lively read for those interested in the travels of Victorian women and the places they ventured. \nThe Diary of Connie Shakespear – Amazon review \nTickets £23 including a light lunch and a glass of wine. \nBooking a seat is available online. If you wish to sit with a group of friends\, the booking should be done at the same time to obtain adjacent seat numbers.Seating changes may be available up to 1 week before the event by phoning Cass in the VH Office on 01252 844876 (Mon-Thu 0900-1500 Fri 0800-1500) or email to admin.victoriahall@gmail.com MainSlow cooked pork and cider hotpot\, topped with sliced potatoes.orButter bean and Squash crumble (Vegan\, DF)with carrots and peas andcrusty bread with butterDessert     There will be a selection of mini desserts\, served on large platters for people to help themselves.Chocolate brownie squares with raspberry & whipped cream (Gluten free version available)New York style cheesecake squares with homemade lemon curdMini meringue with seasonal fruit (GF) \nTea or Coffee

SUMMARY:RBO Ballet Matinee: The Nutcracker
DESCRIPTION:The Royal BalletTHE NUTCRACKER[Captured live December 2023] \nRunning time 127 minutes (including one interval) \nDiscover the enchantment of ballet with this sparkling festive treat for the whole family \n\nA young girl’s enchanted present leads her on a wonderful Christmas adventure in this beautiful classical ballet\, danced to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score. \nThe young Clara creeps downstairs on Christmas Eve to play with her favourite present – a Nutcracker doll. But the mysterious magician Drosselmeyer is waiting to sweep her off on a magical adventure. After defeating the Mouse King\, the Nutcracker and Clara travel through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets\, where the Sugar Plum Fairy treats them to a wonderful display of dances.  \nBack home\, Clara thinks she must have been dreaming – but doesn’t she recognize Drosselmeyer’s nephew? \nPeter Wright’s nigh-on definitive production for The Royal Ballet ranks as one of the most enduring and enchanting versions of The Nutcracker. \nWith its festive period setting\, dancing snowflakes and enchanting stage magic\, Lev Ivanov’s 1892 ballet has become the perfect Christmas entertainment\, with Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous\, sugar-spun music the most recognizable of all ballet scores. \nLoosely based on the story by E.T.A.Hoffmann\, the ballet opens with a lively Christmas party\, its Victorian setting captured in opulent detail by Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs. Wright’s choreography ingeniously incorporates surviving fragments of the ballet’s original material\, including the sublime pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. But in emphasizing the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince\, the production also gains a touching subtext of first love. \nTickets £17 and £11 for under 18. \nLicensed bar (card or cash)\, with wine\, beer\, soft drinks\, tea and coffee\, run by the VHC. \nCast:THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRY Anna Rose O'SullivanTHE PRINCE Marcelino SambéHERR DROSSELMEYER Thomas WhiteheadCLARA Sophie AllnattHANS-PETER/THE NUTCRACKER Leo Dixon \nCreatives:CHOREOGRAPHY Peter Wright after Lev IvanovMUSIC Pyotr Il’yich TchaikovskySCENARIO Marius Petipa after E.T.A.
